Do I need to have a certain level of fitness/flexibility to study with you?
No, none of the movements or postures require a high degree of flexibilty, for instance, we don’t kick higher than waist level. The system does not rely heavily on cardiovascular fitness or brute strength. However, whole body power will develop as you progress.
Am I too old/young?
As long as you are 16 years old or over, you can train with IPDArts.
I have existing health problems. Can I still learn Kung Fu?
Almost definitely. If you can’t train for Kung Fu you can certainly take advantage of the health benefits of the Chi Kung and Zhan Zhuang side of training until you are strong enough. If you are unsure, why not give us a call to have a chat about it on 07979 525963 or email us.
Do I have to buy equipment/books/uniform?
All equipment needed for your training session is provided by the instructor. There is no requirement to purchase any books etc. to study Kung Fu. We don’t have the ‘white pyjamas’ but we do wear training t-shirts that students can buy.
Do you have a belt/grading system?
Yes! We have three levels of study: Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. Students do not undergo a formal grading, they simply move on to the next level of study when the Instructor feels they are ready.
Who is the instructor?
Wayne Fenegan is the Chief Instructor for IPDArts and is based in Guildford. Wayne has been teaching Kung Fu for over 15 years and has been studying martial arts for over 25 years. Steve Fewings is also an IPDArts Instructor and he is based in London.
What does IPDArts mean?
The Institute of Personal Development Arts (IPDArts) was founded in 2007 by Wayne Fenegan and his wife to promote authentic martial arts and health practices in a way that is accessible to everyone. We place great value in building a community where people of all backgrounds and experiences can come to learn in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The Personal Development of all students should be well rounded and holistic, developing more than just fighting skills.
How long will it take me to reach an advanced level?
Each grade is designed to take a minimum of 1 year. However, it is more likely that a student will spend a little longer than this given the busy lifestyles and commitments of most people today.
Do your students enter competitions?
No. But if a student would like to enter themselves into a competition, that is entirely their choice.
What should I bring/wear to my first lesson?
Wear a t-shirt, sweat pants and flat soled shoes. Ladies might want to wear a sports bra. If you would like to bring a bottle of water then please do so. Please leave all jewellery/watches at home and remove all earrings/piercings etc.
Do I get to meet other students?
Yes. After your first month of training there is an opportunity to meet other students of all abilities at our regular twice monthly Sunday morning club (jokingly known as The Hangover Club!).
